Two psychologists and a doctor Guatemalans began in 1993 to try to rehabilitate children and young people who were inhaling glue and who were living and were employed at the dump of the biggest garbage of the city of Guatemala. To this dump he is named inadequately the " Sanitary Landfill ", for treating itself about a municipal operation of throwing garbage in a ravine, without no technical measure of protection taking to the environment.

After a year of work, only with own resources, there was evaluated that the efforts of socialization, of psychological therapy and of approximation to the addicted young people were not achieving his rehabilitation, a residential program was necessary for which they did not have resources. Nevertheless one saw that many hard-working children in the Sanitary Landfill were not present at the school, many people were not possessing his police accreditation (ID), others had been expelled from the school by his behavior molded by his experience "of street". It was decided to work with the minor brothers of the addicted young men and with the children of the territory to avoid his beginning to the addiction and his incorporation to gangs.

The initial work of the children was that of approximation and education of read-writing later is founded a center of literacy and a school for hard-working and adult children that it takes more than 18 years working. There was implemented also a program of legal assistance in order that hundred children of the Landfill obtain his identification documents.

CAFNIMA's educational work with hard-working children was chosen by UNESCO in the year 2006 to be systematized and spread close to other four experiences in the continent. It took form of the qualified book "Infancy, Work and Education. Eight years ago a program of mike begins finance for the women of the communities about the dust-bin, but being the successful scheme in the urban marginal context, it expands to other poor zones of the capital city. This scheme of mike finance has a rate of low interest and provides technical training to the women in manualidades, cooks, beauty and seam; besides literacy, formal studies, english, computation and business management formation. The women are being organized in communal banks. The success of the model in the territory did that the Italian cooperation was signing in 2008 an agreement to extend the services of the program to women who were taking part in her program, they have had to compete with the offer of service of a national bank.

Since 5 years CAFNIMA spreads to the rural area to attend to the educational needs of children and displaced internal young people of the war, supporting the creation of a college of basic studies for cooperative and a system of educational credit to support the young men who needed to finish his studies out of the community. Also it initiates in one of the poorest municipalities of Chimaltenango, a model autogestionario of community rehabilitation of physically handicapped children that in 2009 possibly spreads to other communities with the support of the Swiss cooperation.
